Cairo travel Advice

Some travellers notes from someone in Cairo about what the atmosphere is like there now, particularly vis-a-vis the curfew that starts at 2am:

1. No taxi's after 12 cross neighborhoods. Cause Basically going from any neighbourhood to the next entails going either through the Autostrad or the Ring Road. Both highways entail harrassment from army after 2, but mainly are NOT safe and just really isn't worth taking the risk with the amount of shit that happens there everyday.

2. Metro is just as good as a Taxi, if possible they should stick to cairo cabs which are yellow cabs that you need to call before hand as opposed to hailing any - again more applicable at night. Also in general do not barter with taxi's these days.

3. Curfew: If you're foreign and you don't look like you're trouble they'll let it pass, more likely to let it pass if you're female driving or female alone in taxi. But in general again it will involve a bit of hassle sometimes - "just get drunk in a pub close to your hotel is the advice I give to avoid having to go anywhere after 2."

4. There are little stops on roads all over Cairo, with two little red cones - please put out at least 1 EGP for these community stops as the money goes toward community projects all over cairo to repaint graffitied walls, and pavements and clean streets.
